Course Overview:
The STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat gives seafarers who are required to take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat (other than Fast Rescue Boats) in emergency situations the essential education and training to meet the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency requirements set out in Table A-VI/2-1.

Course Content:
The learner will understand and perform the safe operation of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch. This will include the following learning objectives:
- Describe the construction and uses of different types of survival craft and rescue boats and individual items of their equipment commonly in use on different types of vessels
- Identify particular characteristics and facilities of survival craft and rescue boats and explain their main purpose, features and equipment.
- Identify different types of devices used for launching and recovery of survival craft and rescue boats.
- Describe methods for launch, recovery and handling of survival craft in rough seas, covering lifeboat davit drill operating procedures – including launching the lifeboat into a rough sea, or for when the parent vessel is still making way through the water.
- Describe the methods of recovery for survival craft
- Identify the actions to be taken after leaving the ship, including commands.
- Describe methods of launching and recovery of rescue boats, including methods used for launch and recovery in rough areas.
- Identify the dangers associated with the use of the off-load and on-load release devices.
- Identify the maintenance checks carried out on a regular basis to survival craft and the ‘First Aid’ maintenance procedures to be carried out in the event of equipment malfunction.
- Demonstrate taking charge of launching and boarding survival craft, and give commands.
Entry Requirements:
Have approved seagoing service of not less than six months
Have received approved or recognised training in STCW Personal Survival Techniques
Certification(s):
Upon successful completion, candidates are issued with an MCA approved STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats certificate, valid for 5 years.
