Course Overview:
This course aims to equip the learner(s) with the basic knowledge of activities associated with the combined Banksman and Slinger roles, and the safety and regulatory requirements of those activities. It is for personnel wishing to become competent in the Banksman & Slinger role in the energy industry.
Following successful completion of the OPITO Banksman and Slinging Initial Training Programme, the learner can proceed to the workplace to work under direct supervision of a competent person – to complete Banksman and Slinger Workplace Experience Logbook.
Course Content:
The course is a mixture of Theory and Practical modules.
- An Introduction to Lifting Operations and the Role and Responsibilities of the Banksman and Slinger (Load Handler)
- Lifting Operations by Crane – Theory
- Legislation and Regulations
- Hazard Identification and Controls
- The Role of the Banksman and Slinger
- Communications and Visibility
- The principles of lifting operations by crane
- Introduction to Lifting Equipment and Accessories
- Planning for Lifting Operations by Crane
- Lifting Operations by Crane – Practical exercises, multiple types including
- Free access lift(s)
- Restricted access lift(s)
- Blind lift(s)
- Lift with an offset centre of gravity
- Securing cargo for transportation by road or sea
Entry Requirements:
None.
Certification(s):
An OPITO Approved Certificate will be issued upon successfully completing the course, valid for 2 years.
The issue of the Banksman and Slinger Initial Training Certificate indicates that the learner has achieved the minimum level of training as defined by employers and approved by OPITO; it does not imply competence in the Banksman and Slinger role.
Note: The OPITO Banksman and Slinger Workplace Experience Logbook must be completed and OPITO Banksman and Slinger Competence Assessment must be undertaken during this two-year period if the learner wishes to achieve an OPITO-approved Banksman and Slinger certificate of competence.
