Powerboat team hail Clyde Training Solutions survival training

Spirit of Inverclyde Powerboat Team at Clyde Training Solutions

Clyde Training Solutions welcomed former British powerboat champions Davie Finlayson and his daughter Ashleigh recently to undergo a bespoke survival training course ahead of their upcoming race season.

The father and daughter partnership, known as the ‘Spirit of Inverclyde’ race team, will compete in the first race of the P1 Superstock Championship in Denmark on 9th and 10th June.

The one-design race series also includes the P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea on the River Clyde at Greenock on 24th and 25th June.

As they will be racing at speeds of up to 65mph, the pair were required to undergo special underwater survival training to prepare them to escape in the unlikely event of the boat capsizing.

Using CTS’s Helicopter Underwater Escape Training equipment and deep-water pool, John Lumsden, CTS Survival and HSE Team Lead trained the pair how to act during a capsize situation.

Speaking before the training, Davie, from Musselburgh, said: “One of the requirements of the Powerboat P1 series is that you pass a ‘dunk test’ so that if we do have an incident where the boat overturns we are not going to panic and we act in the correct manner.

“The course recommended to us by our competition associates was down in Southampton but being the only Scottish team in the competition we wanted to keep everything as local as possible. So we googled ’water survival’ and thankfully found Clyde Training Solutions.

“CTS has offered us a bespoke course, uniquely for our training - it’s great they’ve came on board and supported us in fulfilling our safety requirements.”

Ashleigh, who will be alongside her father in the cockpit as navigator, added: “This gives the confidence to keep calm and follow the correct procedures.

“We’re water babies anyway, and we’ve had a bit of experience with water and survival training, so this is the next step up for us.

“Because we’re used to Southampton we didn’t realise what had opened on our doorstep.

“Coming here and seeing the CTS facilities – the pool and the fire ground - it’s absolutely incredible.

“The operations here at CTS are the next level and seeing it all is quite exciting.”

Gareth Mathias, CTS General Manager was delighted to welcome Davie and Ashleigh to the CTS international marine and offshore training centre in Clydebank.

He said: “Our qualified and experienced trainers and state of the art facilities here at CTS allows us the capability to offer bespoke training when requested.

“All the team at CTS wish Davie and Ashleigh the best of luck in the upcoming series, with races in Denmark, Greenock, Milford Haven and Scarborough over the next three months.”
